Michael D. Somera
Michael is the second boy in a family of 5 born in Brooklyn, New York. He spent his childhood growing up in a very close family where his grandparents lived in the apartment upstairs. He has fond memories of growing up in the city where he attended public school and developed a love for the City. Michael's father had a job opportunity in Florida so he relocated the family to Margate where he stayed until he was married.
Michael attended Margate Elementary School, Margate Middle School, and Coconut Creek High School. He is a dedicated friend and still has wonderful friendships with the same people who were in his kindergarten class. Michael was an active boy who enjoyed playing the tuba in school band and playing soccer with is brothers and friends. He was a stand out player who participated in city leagues, travelling teams, as well as on the schools team where he matriculated.
While Michael was at Coconut Creek High School, he met his partner, Jessica and they began dating in their senior year of high school. Michael attended Florida Atlantic University where he studied finance and accounting. He was employed throughout his college years. He enjoyed working for Toys R Us as well as Barnett Bank. Once he was employed at the bank, he thought his career would take him on a banking / financial industry pathway. He enjoyed the interpersonal relationships he developed with his clients and helping them secure a better financial future for themselves.
While Michael was at FAU, he met a professor who spoke very highly of Indiana University at Bloomington and of their law program. Michael applied and was accepted. This changed his path in life but he was excited to begin this next chapter.
Michael and Jessica were married at the Carolina Country Club in Margate and then packed their bags for Bloomington. While at Indiana, Michael studied hard and made new friends. He also was able to intern at the State Attorney's Office. This exposure to the criminal justice system sparked his interest. He also was privileged to work for the JAG (Judge Advocate General) in Indianapolis, Indiana where he was exposed to many aspects of the law that affect our US Military. It was during this time that Michael shifted his focus from the civil aspect of the law and his background in the Banking / Business sector to pursuing a career that included criminal defense.
In 1996, Michael graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington and he and Jessica returned home. Jessica was accepted at the University of Miami School of Law and Michael began to work in the criminal defense field in Miami as soon as he passed the Bar Exam in October 1996.
Michael and Jessica were not sure where they would settle so they re-located to another of their favorite towns – Annapolis Maryland. At this time, Michael was privileged to work in Washington, D.C. for several very large civil / government firms doing massive document reviews for corporate mergers. He was exposed to an entirely different aspect of the law. This experience in Washington furthered his interest in criminal law.
While living in Annapolis, Michael received a job offer in Miami, Florida where he would be doing what he aspired to in defending criminal cases. He took the job where he remained for approximately a year before going out on his own to start Somera & Associates, PA.
Michael worked diligently to grow the firm with Jessica at his side. As soon as Jessica graduated law school and passed the Bar, she became his law partner.
Michael has conducted over 100 jury trials, he has conducted bench trials, motion hearings, and administrative law proceedings. He frequently travels in defense of his clients and takes pride in his work. Michael is an active member of his Church, enjoys playing tennis and reading. He enjoys the practice of law and considers it a privilege to represent his clients.
